In the heart of Tuscany’s Maremma where the marvellous natural environment still preserves traces of Etruscan and Roman civilizations, the “Tenuta di Paganico” is an extensive and characteristic organic farm.
Situated nearby the medieval village Paganico, founded by Siena as a defense against the Saracen army, during the middle ages the Tenuta was feud of the powerful Aldobrandeschi family. Until the beginning of the twentieth century it was part of the Patrizi Marquisate and then purchased by the Uzielli family in 1924.
Still today our main activity is the breeding of traditional cattle, horses and pigs that live in the over 1100 hectars of woods and pastures. Our animals are fed exclusively with organic farm produce.
The organic products we sell directly on the farm are: fresh meat, salami and ham, red wine Montecucco DOC “I Bandi”, extra virgin olive oil, chick peas, spelt, wheat and barley, honey and soaps.
The main villa Fattoria was both the manor house and the heart of the activities of the Company. Its buildings housed the offices, the carpentry, the workshop, the shelter of the agricultural machines, the stables, the forge of the smith and the horseshoer’s workshop, as well as services for the workers and a club which organised recreational and cultural activities. Today we still work and live in Fattoria and have restored the apartment currently named “La Casa di Caccia”, its name originates from the hall where the hunters used to meet in front of the majestic fireplace after the hunt of pheasants, woodcocks, boars and hares. Only a short walk away from the picturesque village of Paganico our guests have the opportunity to be truly immersed both into local life and absolute tranquillity of rural Tuscany.
I Roggeti was one of the farms of the Tenuta di Paganico. A family of sharecroppers used to live there, planting the land and breeding cows to be used also to pull carts, ploughs and other agricultural machines. The production of wheat, meat, milk, oil, wine and cheese were used both for the household consumption and for the commercialisation. The current apartments have names which recall the activities which took place in each area of the house:
In the rooms of the Mandriolo was the sheep fold; the Tinaia was the room where the wine casks were stored; the Oleario was the place where the oil was kept, while the Caciaia was where the cheese was seasoned; the Colombaia is on the first floor, where the sharecroppers used to live. Today it is surrounded by spacious reserved gardens, swimming pool, play areas and barbecues for pleasant evenings outside. Easily accessible through well kept country roads, only 1 km from the main road and the Fattoria, the farmhouse I Roggeti is extraordinarily reserved and quiet.
Paganico is 25 km from Grosseto, 45 km from Siena and 100 km from Florence. It is easy to reach by car, bus or train. Its strategic position makes it an ideal starting point for excursions to the many sites rich in history and art.
In less than a half hour’s drive is Monte Amiata, with its winter ski resorts and woods of firs, chestnuts and beeches; Roselle and Vetulonia, Etruscan and Roman archeological sites; Montalcino and its vintage “Brunello” red wine; the unique flora and fauna of the Maremma Natural Park; the splendid Costa d’Argento with Punta Ala, Monte Argentario and the Tuscan Archipelago.
For those who prefer to relax, the Tenuta offers an extraordinary natural environment for walks along the Ombrone river or in the 1000 hectares of Mediterrenean woods which surround cultivated fields.
The splendid countryside is also rich in hunting traditions which have also acted to conserve numerous wild species: pheasant, hare, boar, fallow- deer, roe- buck, hedgehog and duck.
Since 1997 Tenuta di Paganico offers high quality accommodation in fully and carefully restored and furnished rural buildings. The rooms and apartments are genuinely comfortable and the location offers the unique opportunity of an interesting, active farm holiday, immersed in the nature of the Maremman countryside and in constant contact with the Estate’s daily life.

A rural building is a very important, inalienable, part of an agricultural Estate, it, inalienable in fact. Restoring rural buildings to sell them, or use them for purposes unrelated to the aims and life of the Estate would in fact result in an impoverishment; thus, Tenuta di Paganico has chosen to restore and refurbish the existing farmhouses and buildings to meet the requirements of hospitality and activities.
