Florence, originally called Florentia, was founded approximately in 100 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire around 1100, Florence got more power and eventually conquered the entire Arno Valley. From 1200, Florence developed a primitive network with trade, and, together with Cosimo and Lorenzo de´Medici
in 1400, it was the most important cultural city in Europe. It was the italian Renaissance, that had Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci as protagonists.
Later Florence achieved status as Grand Duchy, and in 1861, Florence and Toscana were founded as a region in Italy. During a brief period from 1865 to 1871 Florence appeared as the capital of Italy. During those years the development of the architectural urban landscape began and changed the city into what we know today.
